Aperture is pleased to present an intimate and thoughtful discussion between mother and son -- Hank Willis Thomas and Deborah Willis — who will talk about their work, influences, and artistic collaborations.
Hank Willis Thomas (born in Plainfield, New Jersey, 1976), winner of the first Aperture West Book Prize and one of art photography’s rising stars, has just released his first monograph Pitch Blackness (Aperture, November 2008). With his characteristic sharpness and dark humor, the series in the book raise complex questions about identity and race in America. Hank Willis Thomas first gained wide recognition for his highly provocative series B®ANDED, which addresses how commercial branding in America is geared toward specific racial groups and raises questions about visual culture, the power of logos, and media representation of African Americans. Other series include Winter In America, a collaborative work with Kambui Olujimi, focusing on the epidemic of black on black violence in America, and his most recent body of work, “Unbranded: Reflections in Black by Corporate America,” where the artist appropriates magazine advertisements that are marketed to an African American audience or feature black subjects, and strips away all the logos and text, leaving the image to speak for itself. Thomas’s work is now appearing in numerous group exhibitions around the country. On February 12, 2009, a solo show of his work from this book will open at the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York City.
Acclaimed photographer, scholar, and curator, Deborah Willis is currently Chair and Professor of Photography and Imaging at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. Willis is the curator of 1968: Then and Now exhibition at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, featuring photographs, paintings, installations, and videos by 50 artists who have transformed our understanding of identity, resistance, war, and peace over the past forty years. Featured Aperture artists include: Bruce Davidson, Stephen Shames, and Carrie Mae Weems.

For all of the tech junkies out there, PDN's Photo Plus Expo is taking place this weekend in New York October 23-25. PDN has video feed on some of the new and more interesting releases, including more on Vincent Laforet and the Canon 5D Mark II. Also included is a video interview about the new Leica S2, the 37.5 megapixel camera set to be released in July 2009. No word on pricing other than it will be "competitive".
Also at PDN, Amber Terranova has been announced as the new photo editor. Amber a New York native, was living in Santa Fe for the last few years and was a welcome addition to the photography scene there. Congrats to Amber and she will be missed here in New Mexico.

"There are no other sites devoted to the documentary form that allow photographers-both amateur and professional-to easily upload their own quality exhibits and to be a part of the fastest growing community and collection of documentary work on the web."
With other photo hosting sites dropping like flies, this may fly and then again maybe not. In an age where we are inundated with images on a daily basis, it may take more than a hosting service to get your images out there. Recently I was talking to a long time editorial photographer about how she used to get her images out to the right people. It involved a lot of hitting the pavement and even more ingenuity.
This book is still one of my favorite books of all time. If you have never read it or even looked through it, I suggest you do. The author and photographer for the book, William DeBuys and Alex Harris, will be speaking on October 30th, 2008 at 6PM at the College of Santa Fe. The talk will be in Tipton Hall and is free and open to the public.

I recently heard about this exhibition an the NYPL but had a hard time finding any images from it. I finally came across some at Time.
Does anyone else out there realize how far and subversive advertising has become over the past half a century? That's the power of the image.
Here is the release from the show:
"Early in the last century, questions about the health effects of smoking became a topic of widespread discussion, as terms like “smoker’s cough” and “coffin nails” (referring to cigarettes) began to appear in the popular vernacular. Recognizing the need to counter this threat to their livelihood, tobacco companies undertook a multifaceted campaign to allay the public’s fears. One strategy was to promote smoking as a beneficial practice through endorsements by healthy and vigorous-appearing singers, Hollywood stars, elite athletes, and actors posing as medical professionals. This exhibition, created by Dr. Robert Jackler of the Stanford University Medical School, examines the advertising in which, between the late 1920s and the early 1950s, tobacco companies tried to reassure the public of the safety of their products. "

The dress has been a subject of curatorial consideration throughout the last 20 years, exhibitions like Empty as Surrogate in Recent Art (presented by Nina Felshin and the Independent Curators International in 1994), have mostly dealt with the use of clothing as symbols, containers of specific meaning related to class, gender and desire. While these prior exhibitions laid the critical groundwork for the consideration of clothing in contemporary art by addressing a broad spectrum of garments and media, Fraction Magazine is pleased to announce an upcoming online exhibition that will specifically investigate these issues as they relate to the woman’s dress as signifier within the medium of photography. The exhibition aims to reveal the “collective consciousness” associated with how the dress, an undeniably rich surrogate, is exploited in contemporary photography.
We are now accepting submissions of photographs (in digital format) that explore / address / feature dresses of any kind.
To send scans, please attach them to the email labeled Lastname_image1.jpg, Lastname_image2.jpg and so on. In the body of the email, please list your name, email address, title of each scan with beside the respective numbers and size and medium of the final print. A brief description of the project is optional. Please limit submissions to five scans per photographer.
The images should be 72dpi and no bigger than 800 pixels on the longest side.

"For a hobbyist, Pitt certainly knew what he wanted. He was determined to shoot Jolie with Kodak Tech Pan film, which hasn’t been manufactured for four years. Photo Editor Nadia Vellam located 40 rolls of the stuff on eBay, which a courier then hand-carried to Pitt in Provence, France, where the couple have been hiding out since June. A week later Pitt called; he needed more film. Vellam’s first source was tapped out. She finally tracked down a guy who offered her 30 rolls—in Israel. She then had mere hours to find someone in Tel Aviv who could get on a plane to France with the film that very day. Pitt also wanted to try a specialized film used in World War II–era movies. That was a no-go. One of Vellam’s sources instead recommended Ilford to achieve the same romantic, grainy quality. Assistant Bookings Editor Will Higdon-Sudow hopped a flight with it and made the handoff in a hotel lobby. The results speak for themselves."

PHOTOGRAPHS AND ESSAYS BY LUIGI GHIRRI
Coinciding with the publication of the Aperture book of the same title, Aperture Gallery is pleased to present It’s Beautiful Here, Isn’t It…, THE first major U.S. exhibition of photographs by Luigi Ghirri, featuring both vintage and contemporary prints. During his short life, Ghirri revolutionized Italian photography in the 1970s, and is widely considered a pioneer and master of contemporary color photography. His work has influenced a generation of photographers, including Olivo Barbieri, Martin Parr, and William Eggleston.
Playing with different perspectives, his fresh, color observations of Italy’s contemporary culture are witty, poetic, and often surreal. As William Eggleston notes in the preface of the book, “He teases the viewer about what is real and what is not.” Ghirri’s eclectic array of subjects included maps, charts, books, billboards, signs, advertisements, and his own possessions. His images are visually profound and are about the nature of representation and seeing.
Luigi Ghirri (born in Scandiano, Italy, 1943–1992) studied and worked in Modena. He exhibited throughout Europe, with solo shows in Geneva, Amsterdam, Arles, and Cologne, as well as at the Light Gallery, New York. His work is in numerous collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Paris; and Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal. Of the twenty-five monographs published of his work, none have been in English, It’s Beautiful Here, Isn’t It… (Aperture, June 2008) is Ghirri’s first book to get major distribution in the United States and introduce his seminal work to the large international audience it deserves. His estate is represented by Julie Saul Gallery, New York.

"Center is pleased to announce that Patrick Hebert is the winner of the 2008 Excellence in Photographic Teaching Award. "Pato", as his students affectionately know him, teaches photography at Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA and is the Associate Director of Education for the AIDS Project Los Angeles. This annual award recognizes and rewards a high school, college or post-graduate level educator for their dedication and passion for photographic teaching. Since first offering the prize in 1997, Center has awarded more than $31,000 to outstanding photography teachers.
This year's juror Joan Dooley, recipient of the 2007 Excellence in Photographic Teaching Award, also awarded an Honorable Mention to Sama Alshaibi, Assistant Professor of Photography at University of Arizona, School of Art, Tuscon and Terry Towery, Associate Professor of Art at Lehman College of the City University of New York.

Photography Exhibition to open at the Palace of the Governors
SANTA FE - The Photo Archives at the Palace of the Governors/New Mexico History Museum, Museum of New Mexico, Department of Cultural Affairs opens its first major photography exhibition in 25 years. Through the Lens: Creating Santa Fe will open to the public on Friday, November 21, 2008 with a reception, hosted by the Women’s Board, from 5 – 7 PM. Co-curated by Mary Anne Redding, Curator of Photography at the Palace of the Governors and independent curator, educator, and photographer, Krista Elrick, Through the Lens: Creating Santa Fe is part of the city wide celebration of the 400th anniversary of Santa Fe as well as the centennial of the Museum of New Mexico. Through the Lens: Creating Santa Fe will be on view in the west wing of the Palace though October 25, 2009. Through the Lens: Creating Santa Fe, examines the history of Santa Fe through the visual record created by internationally respected photographers. Over the past 160+ years documentary and fine art photographers have been drawn to the Santa Fe, its peoples, regional architecture, and the quality of light found nowhere else in the world. Many of the most recognized names in photography have focused their lenses in and on Santa Fe and through their creative efforts have helped define the geographical imagination thus contributing to the mystique of Santa Fe. The exhibition features photographs that reveal the visual transformation of Santa Fe since the 1860s. Featured photographs are drawn from the historic collections of the Photo Archives and from the work of contemporary photographers committed to documenting the magical light of Santa Fe. There are over 100 photographers in the exhibition. (See attached for a list of the photographers in the show) The Museum of New Mexico Press is publishing a book of the same name to be released at the end of January 2009 with essays by Frances Levine, Lucy Lippard, Andrew Lovato, Siegfried Halus, David Noble, Rina Swentzell, and Mary Anne Redding.
A satellite exhibition, Through the Lens: A Contemporary View of Santa Fe will be hosted at the Visual Arts Gallery, Santa Fe Community College opening on Thursday, January 29, 2009 with 40 images by contemporary photographers living and working in Santa Fe will be on view through March 9, 2009. The Palace of the Governors, the Visual Arts Gallery at the Santa Fe Community College, and the Photography Department/Marion Center for Photographic Arts at the College of Santa Fe are co-sponsoring a year-long series of public lectures that are free and open to the public.
