Pirated Magazines
PDN has a interesting story on magazine pirating. The new website Mygazines.com is a website containing most popular magazines scanned from cover to cover. Being a person who has long stood in bookstores and read magazines from cover to cover without ever paying for one, I don't see how much different this really is. Think about how many times you have read a magazine in the doctor's office.... I am not however completely blind to the trouble this will cause and the "can of worms" it could open.

Photography Book Now
Photography Book Now, the giant competition, is now closed for entries.
Blurb, one of the sponsor of the competition, has posted the entries in their bookstore.
There is some really amazing here. Two of the judges, Darius Himes and Jen Bekman, have a tough task ahead of them.
Winners to be announced on September 19.
Have a look at the entries.

Red Dog News
Fellow Albuquerque residents Tim Anderson and Tom Gibbons have started a new photo news website called Red Dog News. Have a look.
Ellen Rennard and Women in Photography
Ellen Rennard is this months featured artist at Women in Photography.
This body of work is about the Albuquerque Downs Race Track in New Mexico. I was fortunate enough to see some of the work in person while visiting with Ellen a few weeks back in Concord Mass. The work is really well done and we hope to feature it here on Fraction in the near future.
To see more of Ellen's work, go to her website.

60 megapixel 645 Full Frame digital back...
The 50 megapixel Hasselblad H3DII is not even out yet and it is being trumped by the new Phase One P65+ digital back. It is a true 6x4.5 sensor making full use of 645 lenses without a cropping factor. Oh yeah, it is 60 megapixels!!!
There are a ton of other grand ideas with this back and if you have an extra $45,000 US sitting around, you can have one too.

Fraction and PhotoNOLA
We've been invited to be portfolio reviewers at PhotoNOLA in December. We will be in good company. To see the complete list of reviewers, see the New Orleans Photo Alliance blog here.
The Photo Alliance is a well run group that is very serious about New Orleans and photography. They have created a model that could easily be adapted to other cities around the US and the world.
While at PhotoNOLA, I will select 5 portfolios to showcase in a special edition of Fraction that will come out at the end of January and be promoted in the same way as the rest of the magazine.
This is a terrific opportunity for Fraction. Thanks to PhotoNOLA and to the New Orleans Photo Alliance.
Portfolio Reviews will take place Dec 6 & 7 at the International House Hotel. Registration will open on August 15, and be filled on a first come first served basis. Check the PhotoNOLA website in the next few weeks for more information.

War and photos.
I found this story at PDN from July 7th.
"Army Medic From Famous Photo Dies of Drug Overdose
An Army medic seen carrying a child in a widely-published photo from the start of the Iraq war has died. The Army Times reports that Army Spc. Joseph Patrick Dwyer, who was seen in a 2003 Army Times photograph by Warren Zinn, died of an accidental drug overdose June 28 at his home in North Carolina. Dwyer, 31, had struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and substance abuse."

Jason Salavon
While Jason Salavon doesn't necessarily work with the photograph, his work does open up a whole new range of possibilities with the image.
The Columbus Art Museum put together this three part video series on his work. The videos are each about ten minutes long but worth the time.
