A few questions with Amber Terranova

Q: Why do you think you were chosen for the 2009 selection committee?
A: At PDN I’m continually exposed to an incredibly wide range of photographic genres—from reportage, fashion, and advertising, to editorial and fine art—which provides me with a rather unique & fresh perspective on what is at the forefront of photography today.

Q: As a previous reviewer, what are your expectations of a Review Santa Fe participant?
A: I expect them to be at a semi-professional level or committed to their photography; to be organized and articulate.

Q: Please describe the work that was chosen by the committee.
A: The work is intriguing and inventive no matter where the project is in its development and it showed that it was going somewhere, that it had promise.

Q: What kind of work typically didn't get selected?
A: Unoriginal work. Repetitious themes executed in a format that is familiar to many other photo projects that have been done before. Also, work that feels like it’s all over the place, showing one image from a variety of styles & genres.

Q: Describe the role that photographic trends play in contemporary practice.
A: It’s quite simply cause and effect. Magazines and Advertisers need to stand out from their competition and appeal to a wide variety of tastes by emphasizing a new and distinctive look. Then their competitors tend to sway in the opposite direction. There’s a constant ebb and flow. Photographers define trends and representatives “tastemakers,” i.e. the industry professionals, react to the trends by using or accepting the trends. Each trend marks a time or period and then in the long run that period becomes a defining point in the history of photography.

Q: What kinds of negotiating happened during the selection process?
A: Because we represent different parts of the industry, we have different tastes. When it came to selecting photographers, we discussed reasons why we each chose the work and the particular strengths of the project with the other selection committee members. When we didn’t agree, we were open to hearing the perspective of the other selection committee members’ expertise in the industry. Because of the variety of different kinds of reviewers who participate in the event, we all agreed we didn’t want it to be all fine artists or all documentary – we discussed having a balance and choosing work that would be most relevant to the reviewers. We valued each others point of view and we could make a case to the other committee members if they didn’t agree initially to a certain point of view.

Q: What comprises a cohesive body of work?
A: A body of work with a clear and focused concept that has something to reveal is part of what makes it cohesive. A tight edit - a well thought out sequence of images that flows in a way that grabs the viewers attention, and holds it from start to finish. Also, work that displays ingenuity and is supported by an articulate and concise artist statement.

Q: Do you have advice for photographers submitting to Review Santa Fe 2010?
A: Be true to yourself!
Find someone to help edit your submission. Do not submit work from more than one project within one submission. If you do shoot a variety of subjects then look at what gels the images stylistically and thematically. Its important to spend a lot of time on the project and seek feedback, you should not submit a project that is too premature in process or development. Show your distinctive well thought out concept.

What are the qualities of a strong image for you?
A strong image creates an emotional response. This can be achieved through the use of color, composition, subject matter and all of the above.

What makes an image relevant to your audience?
An image should speak to the subject but also illuminate something or create a feeling that we don't read in the text.

If you had to choose one which would it be - unique personal vision or strong craftsmanship?
Unique personal vision will always win out although ideally you would have both.

Do you have any advice for photographers submitting to the awards?
Ask yourself, is this the strongest image? If I enter five rather than ten photos is my submission stronger?

Submitting to Fraction

Since the launch of the new site, I have opened the submissions and it has been a bit overwhelming.

The work varies in quality and preparedness but the one thing I keep noticing is that most of the emails send me to a website with no further direction, other than "I hope you like my work".

Needless to say, I have to change the information on the submissions change.

In the meantime, tell me exactly what to look at.  Please do not direct me to a flickr page that does not have sets or collections but does have 64 pages of photographs.  I just can't look at it all.

Travel Plans - things are looking good

Fraction is on the move over the next 3 months.

On Thursday, I leave for Review LA which starts on Friday.  I am really looking forward to seeing new work, meeting new people, and the Photographer's Fling on Saturday night in Santa Monica.  Going to be a great time.

On February 19, I am road trippin' with Jonathan Blaustein and David Ondrik (and his misses), to Tucson AZ for the opening of the New Topographics show at the Center for Creative Photography.  We'll be there for weekend because of various events including a panel discussion.

Then the latest news as of this writing, is I was just asked to be a reviewer at Fotofest in Houston.   Very exciting.  I will be there from March 14 through March 21.

All in all, things are looking good.

Issue 10 is a record breaker

Issue 10 has set the record for the most unique visitors to Fraction in a single day.  I am quite excited.

The New Fraction Magazine

Over the course of the last month or so, I have been working at redoing the Fraction website and having a new logo created.

On January 1st, I put the new logo out for the world to see. I am so very pleased with it and so far the response to it has been great. (thanks Janice Davidson)

Well, today, 01.11.10, or January 11th, I am introducing the new website to the world.  Not only has it been redesigned but it also has a new domain,  Even though I wanted a fresh (re)start,  I also wanted to keep the integrity of the old website along with the past issues and group shows.  You can still view the previous site by visiting this link.

I redesigned the new site to be simple to navigate and easier to view on all screens, including iPhones and other PDAs. I wanted lots of white space so it was clear as to why you were on the site:  to look at great photography.

Speaking of great photography, we kick off the new site and Issue 10 with the amazing work of Phil Toledano, Jake Mendel, Ellen Rennard, Ian van Coller, and David Maisel.  I am sincerely thankful to all of these artists for being a part of Fraction.

In the very near future, we will have a brand new group show curated by the awesome Melanie McWhorter and some new reviews by Mary Goodwin, the associate director of Light Work.

A must see - Manjari Sharma

Fraction Magazine gets sent quite a lot of email, many of which are submissions to have a look at photographers work.

The other day I received one that really stood out.  It was an email from Manjari Sharma, and I was really glad to see it.  She was born in India and is based out of NYC.

Most of the time, the art work featured on Fraction, has been found at portfolio reviews or by me simply scouring the web and other peoples website links.  Somehow, I have missed Manjari's work.

Unfortunately, I have the next several issues planned out and can't include her work for several months.

So, in the meantime check out the fantastic Shower Series.  I think you will like it.  And look for her on the Fraction site in the near future.

(LOS ANGELES, Calif.) January 6, 2010 – The 19th Annual International Los Angeles Photographic Art Exposition, photo l.a. 2010, will take place January 14-17 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Created by Stephen Cohen, producer of the highly acclaimed art fairs artLA and photo Miami, photo san francisco and photo NY, photo l.a. will feature the finest in photographic art—from the earliest 19th Century photographic experiments to contemporary photography and photo-based art. Anthony Bannon, director of the George Eastman House since 1996, will offer an intimate guided tour through the fair before public hours. A recipient of the Rome Prize for his architectural drawings and an independent curator, Gordon Baldwin will offer a guided tour of the exhibition. Attendees will have the benefit of Baldwin’s deep experience built over the course of his twenty-year career at the J.Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles where he curated or co-curated numerous exhibitions, including “Fame and Photography,” “Nadar/Warhol,” “The Man in the Street: Eugène Atget in Paris” as well as exhibitions of the work of Gustave Le Grey and Roger Fenton. Edward Robinson, associate curator of the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department at LACMA, will lead a panel discussion featuring author and editor Stacy Twilley, photojournalists Colin Finlay and Sara Terry, and International Medical Corps’ Margaret Aguirre. All exhibition, lecture and opening night benefit reception (January 14) tickets are available for purchase in advance or at the door. Tickets to the collecting seminars are available online or at the door for $80.

Tickets to the LACMA-curated lectures will be free to photo l.a. ticket-holders, and available one hour in advance at the photo l.a. box office, however attendance will be limited.
